The MassCarCare Carduceus is modeled after the caduceus, an insignia modeled on the Greek God Hermes’ (Roman Mercury) staff and used as the symbol of the medical profession. The connection between the caduceus of Hermes (Mercury) and medicine seems to have arisen in the seventh century A.D., when Hermes had come to be associated with alchemy. This figure is nearly universal, found in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India, where it is a symbol of harmony and balance.
